Chapin Forest Hike

By Isaac Eaton

A couple days ago, we went on a two mile hike in Chapin Forest. The elevation gain was 200 feet. There were a couple of overlooks along the way, and from one of them, we could see Cleveland and Lake Erie. The first part of the hike, there wasn’t that much elevation change. but there were lights, so we could have hiked in the dark until 10:00 PM. On the second part, there were no lights, and there were hay bales along the way. These hay bales were strapped the trees and benches to help cushion an impact for a skier who might run into it. We saw rock formations called “ledges”. The third part of our hike, we went onto the Buckeye Trail which is a 1,444 mile trail around Ohio. We saw 3 black squirrels and 1 gray one. On the last part, there was a icy boardwalk which almost all of us (the kids) fell on. After the hike, we played on the playground and went down the slides, which made our butts all wet.

The picture above is a recording of our hike produced using the AllTrails Pro app. We hiked 2.5 miles. We spent an hour on the trail and climbed 194 feet to the top of Gildersleeve Mountain. The yellow indicates the lights on the trail. The blue is the portion of the trail we hiked that is the Buckeye Trail. The green x is where we saw the ledges. The purple x’s were the overlooks where we could see Cleveland and Lake Erie.
